FSSAI re-operationalises the Food Safety & Standards Amendment Regulations 2020

Since the comprehensive final Regulations will take some more time before being notified and enforced, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notification regarding re-operationalisation of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2020. In the draft regulations of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Additives) Regulations, there is a revision of the note under Regulation 2.5.2. To align the FSSAI requirements with those specified in Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) and considering the quality and safety issues of certain commodities like milk, based on the recent survey, FSSAI has decided to re-operationalise the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2020

Key Amendments as per the Draft Regulations

  1. In the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2011, for the note given under sub-regulation 2.5.2 related to Meat and Meat products,
    • “All the products listed in the regulation 2.5.2 under clause 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
      shall comply with following requirements:” should be substituted with the
      following namely:“All the products listed in the regulation 2.5.2 shall comply with following
      requirements:”
    • Substitution of note (c) with the following:(C) Milk and meat producing animals except poultry, pig and fish shall not be fed
      with feed containing meat or bone meal including internal organs, blood meal and
      tissues of bovine or porcine origin materials except milk and milk products.
      Commercial feeds shall comply with the relevant BIS standards, as may be
      specified by the Food Authority from time to time, and carry BIS certification mark
      on the label of the product.

FSSAI has re-operationalised the draft Amendment Regulations with effect from 28 th August, 2020.
